Welcom to Iron County Post High!

Hi, my name is Holly Harris Thornton, and I am the Post High teacher in Iron County. Our vision is to support students who cannot obtain a high school diploma, by teaching and practicing essential life and employment skills. We aim to serve as a stepping stone, connecting students with their community and empowering students for future success. Post High offers a fantastic team of aides and myself to assist students in meeting these goals.

Some of our activities include:

  • Classroom activities and lessons

  • Job sampling at different job sites

  • Field trips around Southern Utah

  • Swimming at the aquatic center

  • Visits to the public library

  • Grocery shopping and cooking

  • Social Hours

  • Guest Speakers

What is our Focus?

We practice speech/social, reading, writing, math (money and time), and other basic academic needs to help the students thrive in the real world.  Each day we are welcomed with new opportunities to practice being professional in the work we do, as we attempt to build a resume for each student by learning their likes and dislikes on top of cultivating hobbies they can enjoy in their free time to take with them after graduation. Each student works at their own level with the different rooms we have to offer.

*Note: We do not offer a high school diploma at the end of the program as we are still a certificate of completion based school.

Morning routine:
Group meeting where the students gather together to share what they did the day before, check the weather, hear announcements, find out what is for lunch, and get ready for the day.

Small groups:
The students divide up into groups of 2-3 and work on their individual goals with an aide.

Specials:
On Thursdays, Small Groups is replaced with Specials where students participate in physical therapy, library, computers or drivers ed.

Classroom Check in:
Students meet in their home base classrooms and prepare for community by reading from our resource booklets, getting a snack, and taking a brain break.

Community:
During this time students will explore the community by going on a field trip, job sampling, doing a special activity at the school or having a special guest come. Most Thursdays we swim.

Lesson:
Aides teach students lessons at their home base classrooms. Wednesday Lessons we have Voc Rehab, a school counselor, and another job coaching service attend for workshops. Thursdays are life skill lessons where the students practice directions on a drive, shopping or cooking.

Social Hour:
Students practice their social skills by playing games together and enjoying time with each other.

Speech:
Depending on the student's home base classroom, speech may be held earlier for your student. A speech therapist comes in and practices social and speech goals with the students.

Classroom Clean-up:
Students take 15 minutes or so to clean up their work areas so we are ready for the next week.

Fun Friday:
Students get to participate in fun free time activities practicing down time and how to succeed without a plan by creating their own fun. This time also includes an optional trip to the dollar tree if students desire to go and get a treat for themselves.
