Premiere Summer Youth Camp at Weber State University

Leadership & Civic Responsibility

Utah Girls State  & Utah Boys State are summer youth programs offered by the Weber State University. These programs are available to all high school juniors in Utah. These programs are directed towards developing leadership and promoting civic responsibility for students who wish to follow a path in government, political and leadership careers.

What are the Activities?

  • Create Political Campaigns

  • Draft and Debate Legislature

  • Learn public speaking and debate skills

  • Earn Sate College Credits in Political Science

  • Elect Student Senator to Represent the State in Washington D.C.

  • Apply to Eligible Scholarships

Utah Boys State: June 9-15, 2024

Instructions for the Utah American Legion Boys State Application

  3. Do not send any money for tuition to the program. 

  4. Give the application packet to your school counselor who will inform you of the time and place for your interview. 

  5. The application packet should include a copy of the application that you printed out when you applied online, a copy of your high school transcript, and a resume of your accomplishments. 

  6. Be aware that the application requires copies of your parent’s insurance card and your parent’s signatures. 

Tuition Fee

The tuition for The Boys State/ Girls State is approximately $450 (it may very). If you are selected to attend, you will be required to provide part of this tuition. The remaining will be provided by the Cedar City American Legion Post 74. The American Legion requests local donations to cover the majority of the tuition from local service organizations and businesses. 

These local organizations generously donate their money to support our local boys and girls. If you are selected, you are expected to attend the entire course. Once the Cedar City American Legion sends in your tuition, the money is non-refundable. On your interview day, please bring a check made to : “American Legion Post 74.” If you are not selected your check will be shredded. If selected, the check is non-refundable.

Local selection is done by  the Cedar City American Legion Post 74. There is an interview process in order to select students to participate. A few selected students from Cedar City will be sent to the one-week program. There is a participation fee (Usually $450) but Cedar City American Legion Post 74 usually contributes towards the fee. Girls State Update (2023): Girls State Tuition will be $450 but the Cedar City Coalition will be contributing with $250.00 from that amount for each selected girl.

Boys State Update (2023): Boys State Tuition will be $325 but the Cedar City Coalition will be contributing with $225.00 from that amount for each selected boy.

Participation information about place and fees for Boys State is not available yet, please check again with the counseling department.

The Interview Process

You will be required to attend an interview conducted by members of the Cedar City American Legion Post 74. Interviews are done in the  CHS counseling department. 

  1. Please wear a dress professionally to your interview. 

  2. Your guidance counselor will inform you of the date, place and time of the interviews. 

  3. Students attending Success Academy will sign up for interviews at their boundary high school that they attend. 

  4. Once all interviews are completed, those selected to attend will be notified by the Cedar City American Legion and your application and tuition will be sent in by the Cedar City American Legion. 

  5. If selected, you are responsible to arrange your own transportation to and from Weber State University in Ogden, Utah,
